The Elk of Birch and Bone is a victim of the God of Penda's Slake. Its followers lure victims to a chapel filled with transfiguration prayer marks, where the victim is compelled to repeat the line "There's them that lead, and them that chase" until they violently transform into an Elk-like creature. They are then hunted by the Snare-Dogs, assumedly another saint. Once dead, the elk's antlers and ribs become part of a birch tree, and ivy grows where the blood pools. It is likely that this process happens to many of the god's victims, as Carpenter saw another Elk of Birch and Bone in the woods of Penda's Slake.[1]
